WEEK 22 – Old School and New School Photo Masters

Hi Class!

This week I showed you pictures by:

  • Ansel Adams
  • Alex Prager
  • David LaChapelle
  • Richard Misrach

REVIEW:

  • Ansel Adams –
    • MASTER of black and white film photography.
    • Unique skill set — he climbed those mountains to get those amazing views!
    • Darkroom editing in his mind while taking photos — he already knew how he wanted to edit photos when he was taking them. He was thinking ahead.
    • Hired by the government to document national parks — if you do excellent work, you get big/high-end clients — because they trust you to to an excellent job.
  • David LaChapelle
    • Staged photographs — sets are built for his shoots.
    • COLOR – lots of saturated rich colors.
    • Outrageous…. no explaining needed.
    • His photos are featured in car campaigns, music artist portraits, movie promotions, etc.
    • Art history references!
      • The skull that is common in Renaissance paintings!
      • The Pieta by Michaelangelo (Mary holding Jesus after he died on the cross).
      • Marilyn Monroe screenprints by Andy Warhol
      • The Last Supper (LaChapelle named his photo “Jesus is My Homeboy”)
  • Alex Prager
    • Uses actors in her staged photographs
    • LOTS of photoshop — done by people she hires.
    • Surreal, strange situations
    • Exaggerated “vintage” – clown makeup, edited to look like old film, etc.
    • Does photo and video
  • Richard Misrach
    • Desert night photos
    • Time-lapse + flash on rocks and trees at night in the desert
    • Beautiful serene/mellow landscapes

HOMEWORK:

1. Upload your best pictures from this week 🙂

2. We will be learning how to use SELECTIVE ADJUST in Snapseed next week. Come to class with fully chraged devices.

DSLR CHALLENGE: EMAIL ME YOUR PICTURES AND LABEL THEM WITH THE APERTURE SETTING (ex: F4)

1. Set your DSLR to M (Manual setting). Take 5 photos of the same object/subject from same distance and same angle.

1st picture: Properly exposed at F4 or the most OPEN (lowest number) aperture your lens is capable of.

2nd picture: Properly exposed at F5.6

3rd picture: Properly exposed at F7.1 or F8

4th picture: Properly exposed at F11

5th picture: Properly exposed at F22 (or highest number possible with your lens).

  • Write down your Shutter Speed, Aperture, and ISO for each image. Bring this with you to class.

I suggest taking these pictures outside or next to a window with lots of natural light. You will need to adjust your shutter speed and possibly your ISO to get the light meter inside your viewfinder to stay on the middle line (correct exposure).

Light-Meter exposure 3 examples

Since we did not talk about this in class yet, if you are confused, we can do this together as we will have lots of LAB TIME next week since I kept you inside for all of class this week.

SEE YOU ALL NEXT WEEK!!!

I WILL EMAIL YOU WITH INFO ABOUT THE FULL MOON HIKE.
